MARIA DERAY

Social Service Worker

ABOUT ME
My name is Maria, and my pronouns are she and her. I worked at North Peel and Dufferin Community Legal Services as an Intake Worker during my practicum where I gained considerable awareness & understanding of marginalized groups and how systems contribute to the oppression of vulnerable individuals. I came to Canada in 2011 after working in Hong Kong SAR for 8 years. I was born in the Philippines and I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education. Also, I worked as an enumerator in a Community-based Regeneration Research Project after graduation. I am a licensed mathematics high school teacher in my home country. I aim to be a part of an organization that empowers and advocates with individuals, groups, and families who are experiencing poverty, homelessness, mental health issues, and other social injustices. My long-term goals include earning a bachelor's degree in Social Work or Psychology and taking a master's degree subsequently.
I was inspired to enroll in Social Service Worker program because of my desire to be an instrument of change. Society is built with systems that create barriers and increase the marginalization and oppression of vulnerable individuals. A cry for change is urgently needed. I want to take part in promoting social and economic justice and challenge systemic oppressions.
"Work hard in silence, let success be your noise.
